![]() But if you ignore the main plotline, the city’s many residents (who Lumi meets on her side-quests) are fascinating. After finishing the game, I’m still not entirely sure why Lumi’s grandfather was kidnapped in the first place. Intriguingly quirky characters: I won’t lie-the central plot of Lumino City is a bit thin. There are about 40 pages of note, but that didn’t stop the developers from filling every single page of the book with stories, notes, and illustrations. The first page features a Table of Contents with “Pages of Note” marked down-these pages of note are the pages you’ll use to find solutions if you’re stuck. ![]() ![]() The game’s clever hint system, the Handymanual, is a 900-page illustrated handbook that your character can leaf through to find solutions to just about any puzzle or problem. The Handymanual has 900 illustrated pages-only 40 of which are necessary for the game.īut it’s not just the city that impresses. So Lumino City’s graphics look like they come from real life-because they do. Hand-built a three-dimensional model city, and the visuals you see in the game are from that real-life model. Visually, the game is stunning, with incredibly detailed scenes made of paper, cardboard, and wood.Īctually made of paper, cardboard, and wood. The majority of the game takes place in Lumino City, a city built up in the air… on top of a cliff… and partially inside and around a giant Ferris wheel. The puzzles aren’t so challenging that you’ll feel frustrated-and if you do, there’s a unique hint system by way of a 900-page “Handymanual” handbook-but you aren’t going to breeze through this game the way you did Monument Valley.Įxquisite attention to detail: Lumino City is one of the most unique looking games I’ve seen. Other puzzles involve decoding messages, picking locks, and tricking a sea captain into thinking he’s on the open ocean. I know that might not sound like a lot, but the game was asking me to remember a 30-note pattern, which isn’t exactly easy for someone who’s as easily distracted as I am. A notably difficult puzzle for me was remembering six-that’s right, six-bars to a song that my character, Lumi, had to play on a guitar. The puzzles in Lumino City are surprisingly challenging, and require you to use both your memory and your math skills. This puzzler is a bit more involved than the average casual mobile puzzler. And the caliber of the puzzles in Lumino City belie its origins-this is the typical ultra-casual puzzler we’re used to seeing in mobile games. But Lumino City wasn’t initially designed for mobile-it was originally released in 2014 as a PC/Mac game. ![]() It's well worth the cost - a small price for an unforgettable experience. Not your average mobile puzzle game: There are plenty of pretty mobile puzzle games on the market-Lumino City’s stunning visual style and tap-friendly gameplay is reminiscent ofįorgotten Shores. Aside from problem solving, kids also watch as Lumi helps characters and works with them to solve problems. Young kids will love watching the game as an interactive storybook, and older kids will get hooked on the puzzles. Beyond the appealing graphics, the characters and dialogue are memorable and funny, the mechanisms connect one screen to another in unexpected ways, and the mysterious story keeps players guessing at every twist and turn. The game's big draw is its amazing visuals: Every environment was physically built by hand as a scale model with real-world objects, photographed, and filmed with extreme precision to make the experience at once totally immersive and technically astounding. Kids and adults alike will be blown away by its gorgeous visuals, captivated by its haunting ambient music, and reeled in by puzzle after mind-bending puzzle. It's no exaggeration to say that this unique puzzler is one of the most interesting, beautiful, and delightful games in years. ![]()
